Love and the Like
Scott's 3rd project was recorded over the course of one day in June, 2005. More mellow than his last project, this organic live-recorded album features pianist Chris Hennig and Scott with his acoustic - like they were sitting in your living room playing for you.

All songs from Love and the Like were written by Scott Phillips
ENOUGH TO DESERVE YOU
She sat in their bed, as he lied in his chair
Fabricating alibis, pretending he cared
She tasted her tears as she chewed on his words
Knowing she could not believe the things that she heard
She regretted now becoming his wife…a mistake she feared that sentenced her to life
Chorus:
What have I done, what did I do?
Was it enough to deserve you? (repeat)
Through the walls, just down the hall
A little boy lies awake in his bed
He’s been taught the points of love
But all he sees are pointing fingers instead
He blames it on himself for being bad
‘Cause only good kids deserve a god mom and dad
Bridge:
From down there on the bottom…their only choice was looking up
As they conversed with Jesus they felt inadequate and honored
And thankful for an unfailing love…it was more than enough
THREE WISHES
There’s something that I’ve had to tell you for a while
But I don’t know how to say
It was wrong of me for putting off the truth
Thinking I’d have another day
Chorus:
‘Cause I know you would love me anyway
And I know there was nothing I could do to make you turn away
Now its burning on the tip of my tongue
I was so close, but I was too afraid…now its too late
There’s the leaving you can do for just a little while
And I know you’re coming back
But it’s the leaving you can only do but once
And I wish with all my heart it wasn’t that
(Chorus)
Bridge:
I could kick myself a thousand times again
Pushing further toward the edge, driving me insane
With just three wishes I would give myself the strength
I would forget all the pain
And I would re-live yesterday
(Chorus)
All alone, you left without warning
Just last night we spoke of futures and forever
But you were gone by morning
CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE
There’s only room for one of us
In the center of the universe
I know that you were there at first
In the center of the universe
I haven’t seen or heard from you
In ages, give or take a few
I can’t pretend I’m trying to
Long as I’m here instead of you
Chorus:
I can’t remember the last time I cried
The last time I felt something moving inside me
Seems I’ve forgotten the fact that you died
Gave up your own home
Stepped down from your throne
In the center of the universe
I hope your love is breaking in
Come penetrate this callused skin
Melt down the ice and burn within
And take your rightful place again
TIME TO COME HOME
You are out of place
You weren’t meant for a world like this
This is not your home…not really
Suffering seems never ending
But soon enough…soon enough
Chorus:
When its time to come home
The lights will be on
You dreams come to life
And your nightmares are gone
When its time to come home
You’re more than just a guest
The doors have been unlocked
So come in and find your rest
I’ve prepared a place…for you
There will be a day when you can tell
The sheep from the wolves
When the shepherd of the flock
Who seeks and saved the lost comes to call
(chorus)
Bridge:
I’ve prepared a place, but the barricade of sin
Has thrown away the key
But my blood will get you in
HIDE AND SEEK
I am the champion of hide and seek
No one ever finds me
Many have tried
I’ve found to keep the perfect hiding place
The secret’s not to give away
What happens inside
Then you’ll be the only one who knows
You’ll think you’ve got control
But its not the way it goes
Chorus:
I don’t want it to be this way anymore
I don’t want it to be this way anymore
My thoughts are running away with my head
They’re thinking me instead
Its out of my control
Here’s hope…I’ve found it in a flag of white
Raised it up into the sky
Surrendered myself
The more control you try to gain, the more control you lose
Till what you’ve done to get control is now controlling you
(Chorus)
Bridge:
The problem with this hiding place is
I’ve been here so many days and
I can’t seem to find my way back home
So I will send a signal flare
Attach to it a simple prayer
And hope to find someone who cares to help
To save me from myself
BREATH TO DUST
Chorus:
Breath of life
Come fill me up
Where dark, shed light
Give breath to dust
Breath to dust, breath to dust
Trace back, look at our birth
His will, his breath and a handful of earth
Nothing exists till you speak
Nothing can live unless you breathe it
(Chorus)
Finally I can see the truth
Every breath we draw comes from you
Nothing exists till you speak
Nothing can live unless you breathe it
I CAN’T SLEEP
I can’t sleep these days…it’s a bit ironic, but its just too dark in this place
You might agree…you can point out a problem, but can you tell us what we need
Chorus:
Is it peace, is it time, more money or an open mind?
Is it faith, is it hope, is it love?
All I know is tonight
I can’t sleep, no I can’t sleep
Knowing we’re in so deep and we can’t get out
This not excluding the church…another quick new solution still wouldn’t work
Sometimes progress has to hurt
To keep a weed from returning, you have to tear the roots up from the dirt
Chorus:
We’ve had peace, we’ve had time, we’ve had money and an open mind
Where is faith, where is hope, where is love?
I can’t sleep, I can’t sleep, knowing we’re in so deep and we can’t get out
TOGETHER
Rain has a funny way of falling harder whenever you’re away
But your picture sits just inside my empty wallet and your smile makes it okay
Every time the rain begins to find its way back to my heart
I stop to think of every time I’ve held you in my arms
Chorus:
These are the times to remember
As we walk hand in hand outside enjoying the beautiful weather
These are the times to remember
The sun is shining warm upon my back, the birds are singing and we’re together
Falling stars don’t seem so bright as they flash across the sky
Forgive me for being a sentimental fool, but they look so much brighter in your eyes
Chorus:
These are the times to remember
As we look deep into each other’s eyes and see forever
These are the times to remember
The moonlight casts its spell upon the night your face is glowing and we’re together
And when you’re gone I have a place inside my heart where I can go…and we’re together
HYMN (BECAUSE YOU ARE)
Infinite Diety, humbly enframed
In a mortal and breakable body you came
To rescue our souls from the depths they were in
Because of, in spite of, to cover my sin
Master and servant together in one
Come to redeem what our hearts had undone
Father of all come to gather his kin
Because of, in spite of, to cover my sin
Chorus:
Holy, unbreakable, infinite God
Ever unchanging in all that You are
Light of the world and the sun and the stars
You are I am and I am because You are
Shepherd and pastor to wandering sheep
Gave up his life so our own we could keep
Soldier in battle for souls he might win
Because, in spite of, to cover my sin
(Chorus)
Humbly forsaking his heavenly seat
Beaten and bloodied and washing my feet
Opened our eyes to what love really means
The blood on my hands is what washes me clean
CLOSE AS A WHISPER
Chorus:
Come, love, fall on my heart
Be close as a whisper, but never so far
As the blood in my veins, the skin on my bones
Don’t leave me, don’t leave me, don’t leave me alone
Come, love, fall on my heart…come
From before I could walk, I was destined to trip into the grave
Before my first thought, you would suffer for choices I would make
Am I salt of the earth or salt in a wound?
Will I rise from the dirt, or will I rot in this tomb?
I’m falling on my knees…
(Chorus)
Do I believe? Or do I just fool myself?
I can love most with ease, but do I love the least as well?
I can say I believe in the importance of love
Then turn around and leave when they don’t measure up
I’m falling on my knees…
IF I PROMISED YOU THE MOON
I’ve tried it all, everything I know
I’ve called for you, I’ve come for you
You’ve run from me, you’ve left me alone
What if I promised you…promised you the moon
Would you come back home?
I can tell that you don’t wanna listen
I can tell its gonna take some convincing
What if I promised you…promised you the moon
Would you come back home?
Chorus:
Can’t you see whats going on?
We’re drifting apart
Every second that you’re gone
Is tearing us apart
Some say I’ve waited long enough
I will wait longer for you, love
To come back home
Patience comes and goes, it ebbs and flows day to day
But every time it goes I know it takes another memory away
I’m hanging on…I don’t give up that easy…won’t you come back?
(Chorus)
Bridge:
I can’t promise you the moon, No I can’t promise you the moon
But I promise you’ll have everything I’ve got
Just come back home
CAROL JEAN
There’s a girl next to me, she’s as sweet as a breeze in springtime
She’s the fresh in the air, she’s the life everywhere and she’s all mine
On a hot summer say, she’s the cool of the shade
And you’d know what I mean
If you ever could meet her, you’d think it a dream….Carol Jean
Chorus:
Her love, love, love
Don’t you know it’s a wonderful thing
This love, love, love
She’s the joy in the song that I sing
Carol Jean, Carol Jean
Don’t be fooled by the light in her eyes
‘Cause its just a reflection of something much brighter inside
All the silver and gold that an ocean could hold…whatever that’s worth
I’d be richer than that if all that I had was her
(Chorus)
Bridge:
She’s the picture you’d see under “beautiful” in the dictionary
At least that’s the way it would be…if it were up to me
‘Cause you’re beautiful Carol Jean
Down the road when we’re both getting old
And we think of the years that we’ve seen
All that came in between me and sweet Carol Jean was…
